9Cha gets listing with major retailer

NineCha directors Sean Issell and Jay Shao decided to review what development opportunities existed for an Australian-made beverage, and they could not believe what they found.

“The milk tea category is a $2 billion category Asia and yet not one Australian company was making an Australian ready-to-drink milk tea” said Shao. “We have the best ingredients right here, so let’s make the best product, right here.”

Despite a number of inquiries to set up operations overseas (exporting raw materials only),  the two entrepreneurs brought together their experience and set up NineCha (Aust).

“We were adamant that the product had to be made right here in Australia, from as many local ingredients as possible” said Jay. “With over 95% of ingredients from Australia, NineCha keep as much of their purchasing from Australian raw material suppliers as possible,” said Shao.

“Australian Manufacturing equals Australian jobs right here in our own back yard,” Shao said.

Despite many international companies circling our market, we are the FIRST with an Australian Made product and are proud to be an Australian Company.

“It took a while to get in front of key suppliers, being able to share with them the vision for our brand was incredible,” said Shao. “The support we had from both Federal and State Governments has been huge. Exposure through publications such as Food & Beverage Industry News has also opened many doors for us.

9Cha is available in a range of three 200mL ready-to-drink milk tea flavours including Original, Wildberry and Jasmine.

“Creating a product that is lower in fat, sugar and sodium, than the majority of existing products and with an approved 3.5 Health Star rating (suitable for schools) was a no brainer,” said Shao.

All variants have an 18 month shelf life and can be stored in the cupboard or fridge.

“Everyone has their special favourite. Internationally we have a developed market (for this category), our strategic plan is to now grow domestic consumption,” said Shao.

9Cha is made in Australia for Australians.

“We have been very lucky so far to have the support from a number of independent retailers  and wholesalers” said Issell. “Now is our time to take the brand to the next level , we’ve been lucky to gain listings with national supermarket retailers for an Australian-made milk tea , so now we are ‘mainstream’.”

Within the next couple of months the company will be stocking its beverage in a major retailer.
