British supermarkets to launch underground grocery collection service

British supermarket giants, Tesco and Waitrose are on the cusp of launching the innovative “click and collect” service across the London Underground network enabling consumers to pick up their online grocery shopping at underground tube stations.

The supermarkets struck a partnership deal with Transport for London (TfL) to launch the service which will undergo a trail inclusive of six locations within the coming weeks, Reuters reports.

Waitrose will be looking to install lockers inside selected stations while Tesco will have delivery vans waiting at station carparks.

Andrew Yaxley, Tesco’s managing director for London said that the Click and Collect service will provide a perfect solution for time poor consumers.

"The additional TfL pick-up locations will give even greater flexibility to our customers because they will have more options to collect their shopping at a time and location that's most convenient to them," he said.

Mike Brown, managing director of the London Underground said that the partnership represented a ‘fantastic opportunity’ for both consumers and the transport network.

"There is a fantastic opportunity for us to work with commercial partners to deliver products and services that our customers want, and as a result also grow revenues that we then reinvest in improving the transport network," said Brown.
