Diseased pigs dumped in Shanghai river

More than 6,000 dead pigs have been recovered from the Huangpu river, with swine farmers said to be dumping the diseased animals following a police crack-down.

According to the Huffington Post, the pigs are believed to be from swine farms in the upstream Jiaxing area of neighboring Zhejiang province, dumped following the recentemprisonment of 46 people for producing pork products made from diseased animals.

Police in Wenling are said to have seized 6,218kg of diseased pork, with local residents concerned because the river supplies Shanghai's drinking water. Officials have, however, reassured them that the water is safe for consumption.
