Food Magazine Awards in focus: Meat and Smallgoods

Last year, Primo Smallgoods took home the award for its Primo Hot Roast. Now we’re on the hunt for another great new product.

This category incorporates all fresh meats and deli meat products.

Products that can be entered in this category include mince, wings, steaks, roasts and poultry.

The innovation here could be in regards to how the meat is cooked/prepared by the manufacturer or the end user, or an innovative combination of ingredients or processing techniques.

2014 winner: Primo Hot Roast

Last year’s winning product, Primo Smallgoods’ Primo Hot Roast was a first for the retail market, and offers the consumer an alternative choice to the rotisserie chicken sold in supermarkets.

The moisture infused whole beef or pork cuts are cooked to a predetermined level, where they only require finishing off in a rotisserie oven.

Oven-proof inner bags were developed to allow the packaging of part-cooked roasts. The inner bag retains all cooking liquid and withstands normal oven temperatures. The inner bag could not carry any printing or labelling as it is the cooking vehicle, so all necessary labelling had to be carried on an external secondary bag. This outer pack was designed along the same lines as a rotisserie bag.

Mirabel Rosar, marketing manager for Primo Smallgoods said the product is consumer driven.

“Convenience is still very important and we wanted to deliver a meal that had a point of difference – something that kept the consumer front of mind.

“When consumers buy the hot roast, there is no need to cook it, it’s already warm, and is a great alternative to barbecue chicken,” Rosar said.
