Japan suspends Australian poultry imports

The Japanese government has announced it is suspending imports of Australian poultry products and egg-derived products.

The decision comes following a notice of low pathogenic influenza detected in ducks on a property in Victoria.

Officials from Japanese and Australian governments are engaging in talks over the details of the suspension, as a huge number of processed foods can contain small quantities of egg-based ingredients.

The Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF) recommends that exporters of food processed locally and containing small amounts of egg products should contact buyers to clarify specifications prior to export.

DAFF is working to limit the level of disruption in trade.
