Laser-etched fruit could replace sticker labelling in Europe

The European Union has recently approved the use of iron oxides and hydroxides to be used in the laser etching of selected fruit in place of sticker labels.

Previously not permitted under EU law, the use of these chemicals will now allow food manufacturers to effectively laser PLU codes, QR codes and barcodes straight on fruit as reported by The Grocer.

Suppliers have welcomed the decision claiming that laser etching not only eliminates the need for sticky labels, but also improves traceability for consumers, has significant cost savings and valuable environmental benefits.

Managing director of Laser Food Jaime Sanfelix, said his company has spent over three years in negotiations with the EU to get the chemicals approved.

“Consumers will have absolute certainty the product they are buying is fully guaranteed,” he said.

“It limits the risks of losing, mixing up or inverting food items, and therefore facilitates transportation and storage.”

The new legislation came into force over the weekend.
