New, simple to use programmable incremental and absolute rotary encoder ranges from POSITAL

POSITAL has added a range of powerful new programming and connection capabilities and tools to their IXaRC series of rotary encoders, available exclusively from Plant Control and Automation.

Programmable incremental encoders have proven to be popular across a swathe of industries because their measurement characteristics (number of pulses per rotation, output level and phase rotation) can be modified with your mobile phone without requiring any changes to the encoder’s physical components.

Now, the engineers at POSITAL have taken this unique programmability concept to a whole new level with the new generation of IXaRC rotary encoders that provide both incremental and absolute encoder functions on a common hardware platform and are available in a huge range of mechanical configurations and connector types, and adapter flanges to match many of the encoders on the market today.

This new generation of IXaRC rotary encoders use the latest magnetic technology, which is more accurate at high speed than optical based encoders and are available in the industrial standard 58mm and compact 36mm diameter versions, making them small enough to fit in the palm of your hand.

The rotary encoders are fully supported by a comprehensive set of configuration management tools that can be accessed by end users over the entire working life of the encoder.

With the ability to be programmed by any Wi-Fi-enabled electronic device, the encoders’ performance characteristics can be extensively modified on-site or on the fly without requiring any changes to their physical components.

Once the tool has been powered up, any Wi-Fi-enabled smartphone, tablet, or laptop computer can be used to connect to a hotspot or via Bluetooth, and the configuration interface will automatically open up in a standard web browser window – no app, no software installation, and no Ethernet connection is required.

POSITAL also provides an Internet-enabled configuration management system for their IXaRC programmable encoders, so whenever a device is reconfigured, the operator has the option of registering the changes with POSITAL through an automatic email interface.

By utilising the latest magnetic technology, which is more accurate at high speed than optical based encoders, the IXaRC programmable encoders offer greater design flexibility, simpler inventory and great flexibility for repairs, which helps to eliminate downtime.

In terms of extra features, the IXaRC programmable encoders also have configurable parameters and allow five different rotation measurement modes to be configured by using the common hardware platform, fully independent of any operating system.

The encoders also come with an optional stainless steel housing, while heavy-duty housings are available for high shock and vibration resistance.

The range of incremental encoder parameters that can be selected include:

Pulses per revolution (any number 1 to 16384), Incremental output driver

Push Pull (HTL) or Line driver (TTL) and the A/B incremental phase rotation.
