President’s Medal finalists announced

Six finalists for the tenth anniversary of the President’s Medal have been announced by the Royal Agricultural Society of NSW (RAS).

The finalists represent sustainable agricultural practices, and have been selected from a pool of over 5,650 entries from the Sydney Royal Wine, Beer and Cider, Cheese and Dairy, and Fine Food Shows, where they were each awarded Champion status in their respective classes.

To commemorate the tenth anniversary, this year RAS President, Robert Ryan, selected Tyrrell’s Wine as the sixth finalist as a President’s Choice nomination.

Introduced by the RAS in 2006, the President’s Medal is the only competition of its kind in Australia, where award-winning products from across the dairy, fine food and wine industries are judged against each other.

The finalists are assessed on a whole-of-company approach to the production and marketing of a Champion Sydney Royal product, with financial, social and environmental performance all part of the judging criteria.

“All six producers exemplify a ‘paddock to plate’ ethos, and by recognising these practices we can help educate consumers about the importance of encouraging and supporting the sustainable development of agriculture,” said Robert Ryan, President of the RAS.

“Esteemed awards can add great value to products domestically and internationally, so we’re excited to see who will become our tenth President’s Medal winner and join past victors including Australia’s oldest family owned winery Yalumba and household dairy producer Bulla.”

Returning to the judging panel this year is Simon Marnie, renowned food lover and ABC presenter who has judged the President’s Medal since its inception. He will be joined by Michael Bullen, Department of Primary Industries, Deputy Director General, Agriculture NSW.

The judges will review operations and observe the production practices of the finalists to gather economic, environmental and local information about the production of each Champion product.

The President’s Medal winner will be announced at an Awards Ceremony on Thursday 23 July 2015 at Sydney Showground.

The winner will receive $10,000 as well as the prestigious silver heritage President’s Medal.
