What happens when you take two great names in craft beer and give them free reign in the brew house? The result is ‘The Bloke’, an innovative collaboration brew between Fremantle’s Sail & Anchor and leading US craft beer brewer, San Diego based Karl Strauss Brewing Company.
The Bloke red ale is the latest, limited edition seasonal release from Sail & Anchor following previous releases ‘Jack Tar’, ‘Changing Tides’ and ‘Devil Dodger’. Sail & Anchor brewmaster Bill Hoedemaker says The Bloke’s aroma is reminiscent of the smell of butterscotch, hitting the nose with warm caramel and toffee notes.
“Taste-wise, The Bloke is medium-bodied and toasty; and the combination of US and Australian hops gives it great aroma and lingering bitterness. Pour it into a glass to open up the nose and get a glimpse of that fantastic deep amber colour,” says Bill.
Karl Strauss’ Brew Master Paul Segura, who visited Fremantle to develop the collaboration adds, “The Bloke has a lot of those nice caramel-like flavours – toasty, nutty, toffee. How can you not like any of those flavours? That rich amber colour from the caramelisation looks delicious and will no doubt appeal to a broad audience.”
“The decision to create a red ale came about organically with Sail & Anchor. When the original mock-up of the recipe came across I thought ‘Wow these guys are feeling exactly the way I’m feeling’. We all love red ales and Karl Strauss has over 25 years experience in creating them,” Paul says.
The Bloke is available on tap at Sail & Anchor Hotel in Fremantle, selected ALH venues across NSW, QLD, VIC and WA and at all Dan Murphy’s and BWS stores nationwide with a RRP $8 for a 640mL bottle.
