SARDI review aiming to commercialise more food research

The South Australian Research and Development Institute (SARDI) is likely to increase its role in the commercialisation of food products, following an upcoming review into its operations.

As the Adelaide Advertiser reports, SARDI was established in 1992 as the state’s principle research body for primary industries and the food and agribusiness sectors.

The review will look into ways the institute can better use its research for product development and helping the South Australian food sector compete globally.

Primary Industries and Regions South Australia’s deputy chief executive Mehdi Doroudi told the Advertiser, while SARDI needs to increase its role in product commercialisation, it will retain its commodity focus.

“When it comes to research and development, the main thing missing from SARDI and all research organisations, is they are well focused on research and development, but less so on extension and commercial development,” Professor Doroudi said.

“We though it timely to go through a process to see how we can commercialise more of the research outputs and how we can transfer that to the real world and create an outcome that industry in South Australia needs.”

The review is expected to be completed by the end of June.
