Senate inquiry an opportunity to expose misinformation: AFGC

Australian food manufacturers have welcomed the Senate inquiry into food labelling.

The Australian Food and Grocery Council has said that it would be helpful in addressing misinformation about halal certification, which is necessary for export access to many markets.

Chief executive of the AFGC, Gary Dawson, said that halal certified companies had received abuse by phone and social media.

“At a practical level, halal certification for many food companies is simply a requirement for them to export into countries like Indonesia or Malaysia, or to market their products to people of the Muslim faith here in Australia," Dawson told the ABC.
