WA farmers face off with dairy processors

Angry Western Australian dairy farmers have had a meeting with the bosses of the dairy processors which dumped them.

As the West Australian reports, executives from major processors, Brownes, Harvey Fresh and Lion yesterday attended a meeting in Busselton to explain their decisions to not renew some dairy farmers’ contracts.

Brownes and Harvey Fresh have not renewed the contracts of four farmers and five suppliers, respectively.

Brownes chief executive Tony Girgis (pictured) said the action was the result of an oversupply of milk and the company was looking at options, such as making cheese production at Brunswick, to deal with the issue.

One of the suppliers dropped by Harvey Fresh, Former WAFarmers president Mike Norton said he believes the number of dairy producers in WA is likely to drop from 140 to 100.
